Natura 2000 network is the main tool for the conservation of habitats and animal and plant species in Europe. For this purpose, the Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) have been identified within the Community borders. These areas are particularly relevant from a naturalistic point of view, as they contain species and habitats protected under directive 92/43/EEC, the so-called "Habitats Directive". Under this criterion, the SAC IT5210067 Mount Pizzuto and Mount Alvagnano was designated in 2014. It is a small oasis of 1394 hectares, between the hamlets of Civita and Pescia (between the municipalities of Cascia and Norcia). It includes habitats of community interest, indicated by numerical codes, such as the grasslands "6210" and "6230" and the beech woods "9210". They host strictly protected vulnerable species such as the wolf, the lesser horseshoe, the rosalia alpina, the golden eagle, the rock partridge, the tawny pipit and the woodlark.
